چکیده

We have experimented with a bio-inspired selforganizing texture and hardness perception system which automatically learns to associate the representations of the two submodalities with each other. To this end we have developed a microphone based texture sensor and a hardness sensor that measures the compression of the material at a constant pressure. The system is based on a novel variant of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM), called Associative Self-Organizing Map (A-SOM). The A-SOM both develops a representation of its input space and learns to associate this with the activity in an external SOM or A-SOM. The system was trained and tested with multiple samples gained from the exploration of a set of 4 soft and 4 hard objects of different materials with varying textural properties. The system successfully found representations of the texture and hardness submodalities and also learned to associate these with each other.

Experiments with Self - Organizing Systems for Texture and Hardness Perception

We have experimented with different SOM-based architectures for bio-inspired self-organizing texture and hardness perception systems. To this end we have developed a microphone based texture sensor and a hardness sensor that measures the compression of the material at a constant pressure. We have implemented and successfully tested both monomodal systems for texture and hardness perception, bim...

Rotation-independent representations for haptic movements

The existence of a common mechanism for visual and haptic representations has been reported in object perception. In contrast, representations of movements might be more specific to modalities. Referring to the vertical axis is natural for visual representations whereas a fixed reference axis might be inappropriate for haptic movements and thus also inappropriate for its representations in the ...

An Exploration of Representations to Aid Design of Haptic Behaviours

Haptic representations need to support human goals, capabilities, and desires. Thus a challenge is to create usable and intuitive haptic representations of intangible real-world ideas. To support this challenge of designing better haptic interfaces, we need better abstract representations of haptic signals, and of the space the signals represent. These representations will (a) help designers ex...

Textual Annotation in a Head Tracked, Stereoscopic Virtual Design Environment

In this paper we describe the textual annotation system we have implemented in CHaMUE, our Collaborative Haptic MarkUp Environment software. This head tracked, stereoscopic virtual environment for design review allows remote participants to critique and refine product design ideas in real time, both by drawing on 3D virtual representations of the objects and by placing textual annotations linke...

Size-Sensitive Perceptual Representations Underlie Visual and Haptic Object Recognition

A variety of similarities between visual and haptic object recognition suggests that the two modalities may share common representations. However, it is unclear whether such common representations preserve low-level perceptual features or whether transfer between vision and haptics is mediated by high-level, abstract representations. Two experiments used a sequential shape-matching task to exam...
